Snæfellsnes Peninsula: Iceland in Miniature

The Black Pearl of the West
Often called "Iceland in Miniature," the Snæfellsnes Peninsula has it all: a glacier, a volcano, lava fields, and dramatic cliffs. But the most iconic sight is undoubtedly Búðakirkja - a lonely black church sitting on the edge of a lava field. Driving here feels like entering a different world, just 2 hours from Reykjavik.
Our Philosophy
Why is the Church Black?
Búðakirkja is a photographer's dream due to its stark contrast with the surrounding nature.
The Color: The exterior is painted with pitch to protect the wood from the harsh Icelandic elements, giving it that deep, matte black finish.
The History: Though the current building dates from 1987, a church has stood on this spot since 1703. It’s one of the few black churches remaining in Iceland.
